The article intends to undertake theoretical efforts through bibliographic research.
First, we want to reflect on the interaction between social movements and political parties
based on a fertile set of productions that have explored different connections between social
movements and the political system. Next, we intend to discuss the interactions between the
Brazilian LGBTI+ Movement and political parties in search of social and political
transformations through institutional politics. We argue that the main reasons for this alliance
consist of the ideological and strategic affinity and the joint search to achieve political results,
overcoming the exclusively confrontational/challenging views of the movements in relation to
political institutions. The gains are twofold: social movements can access party resources for
their purposes, while parties gain in terms of mobilization and connection with social
interests, enhancing their representative function.
